Swaziland Homeopathy Project
Vision Statement

The vision of SHP is to establish a permanent and free homeopathic service for women, men and children living with and affected by HIV and AIDS in all regions of Swaziland and therefore to improve the life expectancy of the population of Swaziland.

Mission Statement

  • To support local community based projects which aim to bring about social and economic empowerment, such as the home based handicraft projects Tintsaba and Gone Rural.
  • To offer holistic care to people suffering from illness, trauma, grief and stigma which are associated with HIV/AIDS.
  • To treat chronic and acute illness in target areas.
  • To provide an outreach service for those most in need.
  • To raise funds to support the activities of the project.

Objectives

The main objectives of the SHP are to:
  • work in conjunction with three community based organisations that promote social and economic empowerment in rural communities by offering holistic care and emotional support to people suffering from illness, trauma, grief and stigma especially that which is associated with HIV/AIDS;
  • expand clinics and make homeopathy available to at least 2 other HIV/AIDS community support groups and work in conjunction with organisations such as the Salvation Army;
  • maintain the number of existing homeopathic clinics at 5 per week by 2011, by extending the number of rural community mobile outreach clinic locations;
  • identify 3 Swazi homeopath trainees to begin training by 2010 and recruit two additional qualified homeopaths to sustain the project by 2011;
  • to promote awareness of Homeopathy and carry out a scientifically verifiable study on the effect of Homeopathy as a treatment for the side effects of the ART;
  • maintain a website and through systematic collection of data maintain a database to monitor and evaluate the project; and
  • ensure sustainability of the project by acquiring funding to support its activities.

Project Purpose and Description

It is the goal of the SHP to offer appropriate homeopathic treatment, so that life expectancy may be extended and the valuable rural handcraft projects can continue to flourish and support the communities without losing their expertise to morbidity related HIV/AIDS.

The main issues are that:
  • due to stigma and despite education, people are unwilling to test;
  • 40 % of the women on these projects are estimated to be HIV positive;
  • despite ART availability women on these projects are still dying;
  • the number of clinics needs to be increased in order to better serve the communities, and
  • it is important to provide Homeopathic support to everyone regardless of their status.
