Swaziland Homeopathy Project
The goal of the project is to establish permanent free Homeopathic clinics to impoverished communities. The target beneficiaries are women, children and men including people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS in Swaziland. Homeopathy can be an important adjunct to the provision of Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) enhancing people’s quality of life by alleviating drug side effects. The homeopathic treatment improves patients’ physical and mental wellbeing and so enables them to continue working to support their families. Homeopathic remedies are inexpensive and easy to store and therefore ideally suited to mobile clinics.
This treatment also benefits those patients who are not yet on the ART but who are HIV positive. It must be emphasised that in Swaziland there are a large number of people who have not been tested but whose symptoms suggest that they are most probably HIV positive. This project is endorsed by the Ministry of Health’s National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA).
The clinics are largely held in the rural areas of Swaziland, in conjunction with two home based women’s handicraft projects; Tintsaba and Gone Rural. In addition clinics serving the broader communities of Malkerns, Mahlanya, Lobamba and Umbuluzi have been established.
Since the project started in June 2008, approximately 1 000 patients have been seen and funding has enabled expansion of the clinics from 2 to 4 per week. In addition a study of the effects of Homeopathy on ART side effects has been commenced. A database has been set up which will be of use to all those involved in the treatment and support of communities infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
