This is the only specialist veterinary pathology practice in southern Africa that is dedicated to disease diagnosis in wildlife and exotic birds. It provides:
  • Rapid accurate disease diagnosis
  • Personalised interactive service
  • 17 years of experience as a pathologist in Africa
  • Life-long involvement in wildlife issues in southern Africa
The service is based in Pretoria, from where there is ready access to medical and veterinary diagnostic laboratories and academic services at the Faculty of Veterinary Science.
Current projects include:
  • Primary pathologist for the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa for 3 years
  • Primary pathologist for De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust for 8 years
  • Research into the influence of diet on gastritis and renal disease in captive Cheetahs at De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust
  • Participation in the AHEAD program, involved in cutting edge research on the interface between human, livestock, wildlife and ecological health in the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (LINK: www.wcs-ahead.org)
  • Participation in a joint initiative between the National Research Foundation and the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa project to develop a database of wildlife diseases in southern African captive and free-ranging animals and birds.
  • Participation in banking of biological resources in collaboration with the Wildlife Biological Resource Centre, which stores for future research all suitable tissues obtained during necropsy
